I Just Knew ...

There was one moment in time when I knew, Just KNEW, that Don might have what it would take to stay married to me for the rest of our lives.

After being married for 32 years, I can still see Don sitting on the porch of that cabin with his Bible in his lap. We had gone on the same college retreat after dating only a handful of times.

During a break from meetings with my college group, I walked over to sit and talk with Don for a while. When I got there he was in the middle of his quiet time. When I asked him what he was reading, his answer showed me that he might just know the secret to lasting love. Curious as to what he was reading? Or have you already guessed that it was I Corinthians 13, the great Love chapter?

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast,
it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking,
it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

He “had me” at “Love is patient”. With each of us standing on God’s foundation of true love. I thought that we might – just might make it.
